Visible Learning

Visible Learning at Lane Cove West Public School

The staff at Lane Cove West Public School have been engaging in ongoing professional development with Corwin which focuses on research conducted by John Hattie and the principles of Visible Learning and visible teaching.

Our School Vision

Lane Cove West Public School provides an innovative, inclusive and future focused learning environment where all stakeholders are expected to be creative and critical thinkers to achieve and thrive as learners, leaders and citizens.

We aim to develop the capacity of all students to be empowered visible learners with aspirational expectations of learning, progress and achievement.

With students at the centre of all decision making, teachers work collaboratively for their ongoing learning by creating challenging, engaging and differentiated learning opportunities that embed the Visible Learning pedagogy.

Aspiration Statement

All students at Lane Cove West Public School make one year’s progress in all Key Learning Areas (or literacy and numeracy) and exhibit the characteristics of an assessment-capable visible learners. (They understand what they are learning, how they are going, where they will go next, and can interpret assessment results and act on this understanding).

Lane Cove West Public School Visible Learning Handbook

Learning Dispositions

Dispositions describe a persons inclination to use particular skills when faced with problems to solve, ideas to evaluate or decisions to make.

The set of 7 dispositions adopted at Lane Cove West Public School reflect those developed by Minds Wide Open. Captain Disposition is our mascot who embodies all of the dispositions and encourages students to do the same.

The Learning Pit

The Learning Pit is a model that provides students with language to think and talk about learning. It helps build their resilience and self-efficacy. Students are explicitly taught about, and encouraged to reflect upon, their learning process using this model.  Students know that it is good to be in the pit as this is the zone where the most learning occurs

LISC and TIB

To develop students awareness of the direction of their learning and the steps they need to take to be successful in daily lessons, a learning intention and related succuss criteria, as well as a ‘this is because’ statement are embedded in teaching and learning programs.

Learning Intentions (LI) - Clearly articulate what the students are learning.

Success Criteria (SC) – ‘I can’ statements that detail the skills, concepts, knowledge and processes required to be successful in meeting the learning intention.

This is Because (TIB) - Describes the relevance and importance of the learning intention.
