Creative arts is mandatory for students from Kindergarten to Year 6.
In creative arts, students discover a variety of art forms through a study of dance, drama, music and visual arts where they learn to appreciate, compose, listen, make and perform.
Each art form has its own unique knowledge and skills, elements or concepts as well as a capacity to inspire and enrich lives.
Choir
Commencing in Kindergarten with the Toothless Choir, Lane Cove West students are involved in a variety of exciting musical experiences. Our students love to sing and as a result of overwhelming interest in our choral program, this year we have introduced an additional choir. In total, our three choirs comprise of 100 students and weekly rehearsals for each group take place before school.
- The Opera House Choir is made up of 36 students from Years 5 and 6. The challenging repertoire is set by the Arts Unit and students work towards a concert at the Sydney Opera House, where they perform as part of a massed choir of 700 children from across the State.
- The Primary Proms Choir comprises 30 students from Years 3 and 4, who work towards a special performance at the Sydney Town Hall. This choir forms part of a massed choir of 300 voices.
- The Senior Choir is made up of 34 enthusiastic singers from Years 4 to 6 who will perform at local events and venues.
We are proud that so many of our students and school families are keen to become involved in important community events.
Our students are congratulated on giving up their own time to participate in our school choirs - a thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile extra-curricular activity!
Drama
This term the after-school Drama Club has been offered to Year 5 and 6 students. Each week children participate in exercises to strengthen their performance skills. These include voice and focus exercises and improvisation games. A favourite game is space jump, which involves improvising a scene then changing the scene to something completely different. The students brainstorm ideas which combine the genres and characters they enjoy. From these ideas the students write plays which will be performed later in the year.
School Band Program
Lane Cove West Public School has four bands, Junior Band, Senior Band, Concert Band and Jazz Band. Junior Band is open to all students from Years 3 to 6 who are learning a new band instrument. After one year in Junior Band, students progress onto Senior Band and the Concert Band is for those students who have been playing their instrument for more than two years, or invited to audition. For any members of the Concert Band who would like to play more music, they also have the option of joining the Jazz Band.
Joining Junior Band provides students with a fantastic opportunity to learn to read music and to play an instrument in a group environment. The bands have many performance opportunities throughout the year. These include band festivals, school assemblies and other school functions.
Further information about the School Band can found on the P&C website.
