Creative arts

Creative arts is mandatory for students from Kindergarten to Year 6.

In creative arts, students discover a variety of art forms through a study of dance, drama, music and visual arts where they learn to appreciate, compose, listen, make and perform.

Each art form has its own unique knowledge and skills, elements or concepts as well as a capacity to inspire and enrich lives.

Choir

Commencing in Kindergarten with the Toothless Choir, Lane Cove West students are involved in a variety of exciting musical experiences. We have two choirs that rehearse weekly before school and are both involved in amazing external performances.

· The Senior Choir is made up of 36 students from Years 5 and 6. They perform at a Combined Schools Festival Choir at the Sydney Opera House alongside 870 public voices from around the state. They perform a repertoire of ten songs, some arranged for soprano and alto, with piano accompaniment and some with full orchestral or big band backing.

· The Primary Proms Choir comprises 30 students from Years 3 and 4, who work towards a special performance at the Sydney Town Hall. This choir forms part of a massed choir of 300 voices.

We are proud that so many of our students and school families are keen to become involved in important community events.

Our students are congratulated on giving up their own time to participate in our school choirs - a thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile extra-curricular activity!

Dance

Stage 3 students have the opportunity to audition for our Senior Dance Group which runs in Term 1 and 2 every year. Our dance group comprises 20 students who perform at the Sydney North Public Schools Dance Festival at Glen Street Theatre, Belrose. Sydney North Public School Dance Festival is organised and run by teacher volunteers and includes over 100 primary and high schools from the Northern Sydney region. The students rehearse weekly before school in preparation for three live performances at the theatre. The shows are highly professional and inspire the students to experience the challenge, thrill and joy of dance performance.

Drama

Every two years our Stage 3 students are involved in a production which is chosen from Music Theatre International, Broadway JR. Every student is involved in the show whether it be as a part of the main cast, ensemble, backstage crew or their class item. The main cast is selected through an audition panel and the ensemble is open to anyone who would like to join.

The main cast rehearse twice weekly for three terms to prepare for the show and the Stage 3 students rehearse for their class item in Creative Arts lessons in Term 3. We perform three shows in our school hall over two nights and a matinee. Our productions have given the students a once in a lifetime experience where they are encouraged to challenge themselves, inspire others and develop a passion for the performing arts. We are always so proud of the student’s commitment to the production; they absolutely amaze the audience with their abilities.

School Band Program

Lane Cove West Public School has four bands, Junior Band, Senior Band, Concert Band and Jazz Band. Junior Band is open to all students from Years 3 to 6 who are learning a new band instrument.  After one year in Junior Band, students progress onto Senior Band and the Concert Band is for those students who have been playing their instrument for more than two years, or invited to audition. For any members of the Concert Band who would like to play more music, they also have the option of joining the Jazz Band.

Joining Junior Band provides students with a fantastic opportunity to learn to read music and to play an instrument in a group environment.  The bands have many performance opportunities throughout the year.  These include band festivals, school assemblies and other school functions.

Further information about the School Band can found on the P&C website.
